  • washing machine not cleaning clothes

Clothes are not clean

If you feel like you're not getting the cleaning performance you want out of your washer, it can generally be attributed to how the washer is being used. This guide will walk you through the correct usage and maintenance of your washer to keep your clothes as clean as they can be.

What cleaning symptom are you experiencing?

Poor washer cleaning performance
  • Use the right cycle and settings for your laundry.
Your washer comes with several different cycles and settings. This is because you have different types of laundry. Washing them all the same way won't get them as clean as they could be.
Consult the manufacturer's label on each item in the load, and refer to the fabric care chart included in your user manual.

After you know what each piece of laundry needs, sort them. If different pieces require different settings, don't wash them together. Using a separate load will significantly improve the lifespan of your clothes.

Find the type of HE Detergent you like best, and use only the proper amount.
  • Never fill any compartment in the detergent drawer over the MAX line for any reason. This causes it to enter the wash prematurely, reducing cleaning performance and can even cause stains.
  • Always use the amount of detergent or fabric softener that the manufacturer recommends for the size load you're washing. If that would mean filling it past the MAX line, then you either need to find a more concentrated version or reduce the size of your load.
    • If your load is small enough or your detergent is concentrated enough, it's still possible to use too much detergent, even if you never exceed the MAX line.

    • You might be tempted to think more detergent will get it cleaner, but the reverse is true. Using too much actually gets your clothes less clean. Same with using too little. So be sure to use the recommended amount.

  • Be careful with fabric softener. It can stain clothing that's not designed for it. It can also leave residue on your clothes, and cause towels to not absorb water as well. Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and compare that to the labels on your clothing.

  • The detergent you use is a personal choice, and cleaning performance varies widely between the available options. Some detergents can be more effective than others but only for certain materials or temperatures. You'll have to experiment to find the type that gives the results you want. However, it always has to be HE detergent. Any other detergent will cause problems in your washer as well as not actually get your clothes clean.

Do some pre-treating.
Apply a stain remover pre-treatment to tough stains, and pre-soak heavily soiled garments.

When possible, treat stains immediately as they occur. If this is not possible, leave the stained clothing submerged in water with a small amount of detergent added, until the stain can be addressed. If stains are allowed to dry, they may become permanent, and the washer may not be able to remove them.

Use proper load sizes.
Do not overload the washer. If the washer is overloaded, detergent may not reach all of the clothes in the load, resulting in lower cleaning performance.
If the washer is underloaded, it is very likely that too much detergent will be used, still resulting in poor cleaning performance.

Check your washer's level.
An unlevel washer could prevent detergent from dispensing correctly, or reduce spin speed because of wobbling and vibration.
Calibrate the washer.
Calibrating your washer will reset the weight calibration on the washer, and optimize the amount of water used in the selected cycle.

Most washers have Calibration Mode however, some older ones don't. If instructions for Calibration Mode aren't in the manual, it doesn't have it.

What cleaning symptom are you experiencing?

New stains appear on laundry after wash cycle

Fabric Softener Stains

Oily stains will occur if:
• Softener is poured directly onto clothes
• Softener is put in the incorrect compartment in the detergent drawer
• Fabric softener exceeded the MAX line
• Too much softener is used (exceeding the manufacturer's recommended amount for the load size)
• The detergent drawer is dirty or obstructed

In the vast majority of cases, using the correct amount of softener in the correct compartment will resolve the issue.

If the issue does continue, use a different type or brand of fabric softener. Service is not required.

Rust Stains

Yellow, orange, or red stains may be caused by iron or manganese in the water supply, or from rusty water heaters and pipes.

If this stain occurs, the most common reason is the home's water supply. It is exceptionally rare for the washer to be the source of these stains.

You can also try testing your water supply. This can be found in ❝Additional troubleshooting for all stains.❞

Bleach Stains

Permanent white blotches on colored fabrics will occur if:
• Bleach is poured directly onto clothes
• Bleach is put in the incorrect compartment
• Bleach exceeded the MAX line (not all models have a MAX line)
• Too much bleach is used (exceeding the manufacturer's recommended amount for the load size)
• The detergent drawer is dirty or obstructed (some models do not use the detergent drawer for the bleach compartment)

In the vast majority of cases, using the correct amount of bleach in the correct compartment will resolve the issue.

If the issue does continue, use a different type or brand of bleach. Service is not required.

Hard Water Stains

Dull gray or white stains (which are not permanent like bleach stains) could be due to:
• Elevated levels of calcium in the water
• A chemical reaction between liquid softener, detergent, and suds, which can create a white deposit on clothes.

First, see if the residue occurs even when no additives are used. If it does, this means your water supply is the source of the issue. Service is not required.

If the issue only happens when you use additives, then they are the source of the issue and again, service is not required. Use a different combination of additives that are designed to work together, preferably from the same manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer(s) of the additives for additional assistance.

Mold Stains

Spots of brown, gray, black, or green develop if clothes are left in a damp environment. Always empty the washer as soon as possible after the cycle has finished, and perform routine cleaning and maintenance of the washer to prevent these types of stains.

Additional troubleshooting for all stains

These steps can be performed for any type of stain, however the steps specific to the type of stain you have (if applicable) should be performed first.
• Check for pens, markers, paint brushes, crayons, or any kind of ink/dye in the washing machine or in the pockets of clothing that could stain clothes.
• Make sure you don't exceed the MAX line in any compartment.
• Don't exceed the manufacturer's recommended amount for your load size, either, even if it's less than the MAX line. The excess will cause stains and other issues.
• Keep the washer clean. The detergent drawer especially can contribute to stains if it is not kept clean.
