How does tire pressure affect braking distance?

Tire pressure plays a crucial role in the overall braking performance and safety of a vehicle. The degree of tire inflation can directly affect the braking distance, which is the distance a vehicle travels after the brakes are applied until it comes to a complete stop. Proper tire pressure ensures optimal braking performance, whereas incorrect tire pressure can hinder the braking ability and increase stopping distance.

Underinflated tires have a larger contact patch with the road surface, which increases rolling resistance. This leads to a decrease in the braking efficiency as more energy is consumed in overcoming the increased friction. The increased rolling resistance due to underinflation also causes the tires to heat up more quickly, further reducing their ability to stop the vehicle efficiently. Consequently, the shorter the braking distance, the lesser the risk of collision.

On the other hand, overinflated tires have a reduced contact patch with the road, resulting in less overall traction. Insufficient traction during braking can lead to skidding and loss of control, which increases the braking distance and makes it harder to bring the vehicle to a halt. Moreover, overinflation reduces the ability of the tire to absorb road irregularities, such as bumps or potholes, making the braking process less effective.

Therefore, maintaining the correct tire pressure as specified by the vehicle manufacturer is essential for ensuring shorter braking distances. Regularly checking tire pressure and adjusting it to the recommended levels will not only improve braking performance but also enhance overall safety on the road.
